    Security of my personal information

Following the death of my mother we decided to sell the family home in the Midlands. We chose a large and well respected legal company to handle the conveyancing and exchange.

It was therefore a shock to be told that their third-party IT provider has been hacked and that my personal KYC information, including identity and verification documents, had been stolen. This third party provider has since gone bankrupt.

The response of my agent - the law firm whom we had contracted and which is now on the hook for any costs - was to pay for a 12 month subscription to a credit monitoring service for me.

This was a wholly inadequate response since credit monitoring services monitor credit from official and easily monitored sources such as credit card suppliers and banks. The risk to me is not from someone trying to impersonate me to a bank or credit card company where KYC checks are stringent, but where credit is provided in delayed payment transactions or other transactions via the internet. These cannot be monitored in real time, and the onus would then be on me to prove any transaction was fraudulent.
